The Middle Fork
The Middle Fork of the Salmon River runs through the largest protected Wilderness Area in the continental US, and is considered to be one of the legendary multi-day whitewater rafting trips in the world.
Truly a wilderness adventure, the Wild and Scenic Middle Fork descends 2700 feet in 100 miles of free flowing river, coursing its way over 100+ rapids ranging from class I to class IV. A Middle Fork trip will take you through dense, high alpine forests, along hillsides covered with sage and mountain mahogany, and in the last 20 miles, through the Impassible Canyon, with its sheer granite cliffs rising to heights greater than those of the Grand Canyon.
Numerous opportunities for hiking, hot spring soaking, swimming and exploring present themselves during the entire journey. We’ll stop to explore Sheepeater Indian pictographs and teepee rings, early pioneer cabins, and hidden waterfalls. Wildlife is abundant on the Middle Fork and it’s common to see Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, mountain goats, elk, mule deer, and a great variety of birds including eagles, osprey, chukars, and grouse.
Fishing for Westslope Cutthroat Trout in this blue ribbon fishery is unparalled, giving dry fly fisherman the thrill of seeing trout strike in the crystal clear waters of the Middle Fork.
